Journey into the past

Built in the middle of the XIX century, a small house — one of the first on the island. A two-storey house in the architectural style of the Spanish colonists of the 18th century was made, it also has a swimming pool, which is filled with sea water from a well. In 1930, Ernest Hemingway purchased it. Now it is a world famous museum.

Walking through the Hemingway Museum takes visitors back to Key West, when other human customs and morals prevailed. The whole house is as if saturated with the presence of a talented author. The furniture, which has already become antique, trophies and souvenirs brought by an avid hunter from Western expeditions and safaris in Africa — in every detail is felt the spirit of Hemingway. It is especially strongly felt in the workshop where the great writer created his works.

In Ernest Hemingway's house, in addition to antique furniture and numerous trophies, you can discover remarkable artifacts related to the life and creativity of the writer. Among them are vintage typewriters in which his famous novels were born. Numerous manuscript pages with notes and corrections, which testify to many correspondences with editors and friends, are preserved here as sacred relics. In Hemingway's workshop, you can see his collection of hunting weapons that accompanied him on his numerous expeditions and journeys. He was also a passionate angler, and the tackle, boats, and fishing artifacts displayed in the museum underline his love for the ocean and fishing.

Interestingly, Hemingway's house was one of the first on the island and played a significant role in shaping the cultural and historical value of Key West. Today, thanks to the efforts of its custodians, this house remains a bridge between modernity and the time when the great writer created his works.

The descendants of the favorites of "old Hem" — cats...

This is not the only Hemingway museum, but why is the house on Key West considered so extraordinary? All the fault of the writer's love of cats. Now more than 40 of them live in the territory belonging to the museum (and during the life of the author they were over eighty), and most of them have six or even seven fingers on their paws.

And the first cat appeared here in 1935, when Hemingway's friend, sea captain Stanley Dexter, brought a six-toed kitten named Snowball (Snowball). This kitten and won the heart of an avid hunter and fisherman, first with its uniqueness, and then with the cat habits.

It is surprising that before this the writer was not a cat owner, and after that he personally built the world famous drinking fountain for cats. What is surprising about him is that the fountain chute is a urinal from a regular bar brought to the house by Joe Russell, a close friend of Hema. And so that such a spicy detail did not focus on attention, the writer's wife decorated the urinal with tiles.

Key West has always attracted a huge number of artists, writers and poets, but none of them is so close to the house, and the whole island, like an avid fisherman and just a good writer, good old Ernest Hemingway. Many characters and storylines of books are those events and people he encountered while living on this island.
