Crayton Cove is a small seaside community in Naples, Florida. Located south by the bay, between 8th and 12th avenues. Here you can experience a relaxed seaside atmosphere and visit many historic buildings.
The Origin Story of Crayton Cove
Crayton Cove, nestled in Naples, Florida, boasts a rich history and charm. Known as the "Back Bay," it was Naples' first sheltered harbor, attracting the fishing trade. In 1915, Annie Rivers and her son Chiz were among the area's earliest settlers. This bay played a pivotal role for the builders of the Tamiami Trail, leading to further development in the city, including the construction of a hotel, the first pharmacy, and a grocery store. By 1927, Back Bay had become a community hub for the settlers who worked year-round building roads, establishing the fishing industry, and laying the groundwork for Naples.
In the 1930s, Benny Wistar Morris purchased much of the Back Bay area. The 1950s marked further development under Morris's guidance; he created the new Crayton Cove development, named in honor of his friend E.W. "Ed" Crayton, who played a key role in the area's early development and was Naples' first city council president. Crayton Cove's development included the construction of boathouses, docks, shops, and offices, and by 1952, it became the headquarters for the Town's Guide Boat Association.
The area was heavily impacted by Hurricane Donna in 1960, leading to the destruction of the fishing pier and the demolition of the Bayview Inn. In the 1970s, the building that now houses The Dock restaurant became the founding site of Walden University. Crayton Cove underwent a renovation in the 1990s to improve parking and pedestrian access, enhancing its marina.
Today, Crayton Cove is known for its fish cleaning stations, a bait shop, bathroom facilities, hotels, retail stores, offices, restaurants, and more, making it a vibrant center for social and business activities in Naples.
