History of Russian Hill

The name "Russian Hill" dates back to the Gold Rush era when settlers discovered a small Russian cemetery at the hill's summit. Russian naval and commercial ships frequently visited San Francisco throughout the 19th century, starting in 1806. Several accounts mention the burial of crew members at the Russian Hill cemetery in the first half of the century. Although the cemetery has long been removed, the name remains.

While the oldest Russian Orthodox church in the area is Holy Trinity Cathedral, located a few blocks from Van Ness and Green Street, the Russian-speaking community now predominantly resides in Richmond.

What’s Happening Now?

Today, Russian Hill is home to charming restaurants, bars, and small businesses clustered along the green Hyde Street between Jackson and Union Streets. Polk Street is lined with eclectic boutiques, antique shops, trendy restaurants, nightclubs, and tourist attractions.

Between Polk and Green Streets, a mini French Quarter has emerged, featuring a delightful bistro, a traditional café-boulangerie, a French antique store, and several souvenir shops.
