Miami Art and Graffiti Quarter
Wynwood Walls is a whole area of graffiti in Miami, wall painting, street art and the world capital of free artists, ready to show their world view as widely as possible. This is not a dull schedule of new buildings or self-expressing adolescents. The entire vast area is covered with real artworks from top-class masters from around the world.
Wynwood is an object of pilgrimage for tourists and vacationers who strive to take vivid pictures against the backdrop of the most impressive works.
To help you understand the extent of what is happening, the Wynwood area itself, in addition to street art objects, includes:
- as many as 5 museums;
- more than 70 art galleries;
- 7 art complexes;
- more than a dozen open studios;
5 extensive fairs where you can purchase your favorite art objects.
Oddly enough, many come to Wynwood Walls just to take cool selfies among large-scale art objects. Another thing is that Wynwood’s magic is so great that the most nonchalant gawkers forever imbued with a love of art and go to study drawing and design to stay here forever. Be on the alert!
Cultural events at Wynwood Walls take place daily and throughout the world. Changing the exposure of the main gallery — weekly.
The vibrant rhythm and atmosphere of creativity fascinate and attract huge crowds of onlookers, gallery owners, tourists, art lovers, designers looking for inspiration, artists from around the world and collectors.
Where is Winwood and how did it appear
The area is old, warehouse and industrial, located in the suburbs of Miami, and now, due to the expansion of the city in all respects, it has appeared on the outskirts. Borders of Wynwood pass along 20 and 36 North Street, 1 Northeast Avenue and I-95.
Industry in the United States, as in the entire developed and high-tech world, has ceased to generate sufficient profit. The dilapidated industrial buildings were acquired by the late Tony Goldman in 2009 and invited the best representatives of street art to completely color the quarter. Without the slightest exception. He was looking for something big in transforming Wynwood's warehouse area, and came up with a simple idea: "A large area of Wynwood's warehouse facilities, which are all windowless, could become the great canvases for street art and graffiti ever seen and created in one place."
Suddenly, an artwork of such unprecedented power turned out that Winwood gained worldwide fame, enormous popularity and healed his own unique cultural life. Around the colossal art object, new houses are being built with full infrastructure, swimming pools, parking lots and other attributes of a respectable housing. The price of land around Winwood is growing steadily. Once an abandoned warehouse area quickly becomes successful and elite.
Best time to visit Wynwood
The most popular time to visit is the second Saturday of every month, during the Wynwood Art Walk. This monthly event turns the entire Wynwood Art District into an evening street party and art festival, with mobile food tracks, live music and art galleries that run until late, and even give out drinks.
The famous art festival Art Basel Miami Beach in recent years has popularized contemporary art in principle, setting the direction for another major exhibition — Miami Art Week, which is held in the space of Winwood. Only a whole block of art is able to accommodate such a large-scale and ambitious project. The widest artistic program of the festival attracts gallery owners and museum workers, collectors from around the world. A significant part of the exposition is occupied by expensive antiques and classical art.
Near the art district, there are many shops for visitors. The Wynwood Walls Shop, for example, opened in 2012 and contains a curated collection of gifts, books, prints created by Winwood artists. There are also guides and books about the area that visitors can purchase to better learn the history and development of this unusual art object.
Go a little further and you will find everything from shops and unique boutiques, to jewelry shops, fashion houses and much more.
