History of the Breakers Hotel

Thanks to Henry Flagler's business acumen, he was able to create one of the largest railway companies in the United States. Later, he also became a co-owner of an oil company founded by Rockefeller. However, while wealth is important, health is paramount. Flagler himself was in good health, but his wife was not. Doctors advised moving to a warmer and more comfortable climate. Flagler chose Florida, and it was there, in early 1896, that he opened his hotel, the Palm Beach Inn. It was a simple and modest hotel with ocean views.

During an expansion project in 1903, the Palm Beach Inn caught fire and was destroyed. By 1906, it was rebuilt and renamed the Breakers Hotel. Room rates started at $4 per day, including three meals. At the time, it was a highly advanced hotel with no equals — it even had electricity! The management had to hire special staff to operate the light switches in the rooms, as many guests were afraid of this new technology. The hotel hosted the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Astors, Andrew Carnegie, J.P. Morgan, numerous U.S. Presidents, and European nobility.

On March 18, 1925, twelve years after Flagler's death, the hotel was again destroyed by fire — building it out of wood was perhaps a mistake. The widowed Mrs. Flagler's family was determined to build the world's best resort on its site. The renowned architectural firm Schultze & Weaver was hired to design the new version of the hotel. The Villa Medici in Rome inspired the new facade. The building was constructed not of wood, but concrete.

The hotel reopened in 1926, featuring over 400 ocean-view rooms, spacious public areas, and world-class amenities. Today, the hotel remains an impressive masterpiece of luxury.
