History of the comic book festival
Comic-Con is an exhibition that educates people about pop culture. The bet is on comics and related art forms.
Organizers support public presentations and exhibitions on the historical contribution of graphic novels to art and culture.
Like the comic book superhero, the annual Comic-Con festival in San Diego was rooted in humble origins and then turned into something great.
Comic-Con International was founded by comic book writer and artist Shel Dorf. The first event took place in 1970, in the hotel building. This event attracted about 300 people. In 1974, the first masquerade took place — an annual parade of fans in comedy costumes based on comics.
It’s worth a little talk about the Eisner Awards — an analogue of the Oscars for the comic book industry. It has been awarded annually since its inception in 1988. The list of nominees is considered a must-have shopping list for fans of graphic novels. In addition, publishers proudly display the Eisner Awards logo on their nominated books.
Comic-Con moved in 1991 to a conference center located near the center of San Diego. By 2004, the convention had reached its goal of using the entire space of the conference center, including a hall with a capacity of 6,500 people, which is used for watching films and television shows.
Since 1995, lectures by masters began to be actively held. Neil Gaiman set the tradition in his speech, where he addressed the nature and significance of awards. In subsequent years, keynote speakers included Dave Gibbons, Frank Miller, and writer Michael Chabon, who eloquently called for the best comics for children.
Features of the Comic Con Festival in San Diego
In recent years, the event has attracted more than 125 thousand fans of comics, films and television, collecting them on 615 thousand square feet of the exhibition area of the San Diego Convention Center.
Despite the fact that every year there are many important comic book conferences in the country, Comic-Con International is the largest in attendance and diversity of participants.
As comic book adaptations are becoming increasingly important for Hollywood, more film presentations and shows appear on the festival that attract the attention of major media and a wider audience of potential visitors. Among the celebrities here were Johnny Depp, Robert Downey Jr., Nicolas Cage, Angelina Jolie, Seth Rogen and even Helen Mirren.
Interesting facts
Every year, thousands of fans travel to the San Diego Convention Center to get an autographed book and look at the exhibition panels. Here are some fun facts about the event:
- The first Hollywood panel was dedicated to the Star Wars universe. The film's marketing director Charles Lippincott showed the slides from the film. Then only a handful of visitors appeared.
- At the end of the convention, Children's Day is held, which includes film festivals, events and family parties for children under 12 years of age. They attend the conference for free, and adults are restricted.
- Every year, Comic-Con hosts a masquerade. The winner receives a prize of $1,000 and a special medallion. Masquerade is not the only event attended by fans in costumes. Throughout the event, fans walk in the guise of their favorite characters.
- This is the place where many studios and production companies announce and release upcoming projects.
- Other cities, such as Los Angeles, tried to transfer the convention to themselves, but failed.
