Paradise Retreat on Marco Island, Florida

Marco Island, the largest in the Ten Thousand Islands archipelago, sits along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. Explore picturesque beaches, luxurious resorts, and much more in our guide from American Butler.

It's remarkable to contemplate that Marco Island was once sparsely populated and undeveloped. How did this mosquito-infested, marshy island transform into Florida's gem?

This paradise, renowned for its shimmering beaches, crystal-clear waters, and tranquil ambiance, offers a haven for those seeking a secluded yet luxurious retreat.

History of the island

The history of Marco Island is a tale of transformation, from a native Calusa Indian haven to a renowned resort destination. Home to the Calusa, descendants of the Mayans, the island was a thriving hub for fishing and hunting for centuries. In the 1500s, Spanish explorers arrived, with Juan Ponce de León naming it Saint Mark's Island. A conflict ensued between the natives and Spaniards, culminating in legend stating that Ponce de León was fatally wounded by a poisoned arrow while attempting to conquer the tribe. Though the Spaniards couldn't defeat the natives, the diseases they brought did.

In the late 1800s, Marco Island gained prominence when Captain William Collier uncovered ancient arrows and household items during excavations. Archaeologist Frank Cushing conducted extensive digs, uncovering the island's rich history. Later, Barron Collier (unrelated to William), a wealthy northerner, bought vast tracts of land, envisioning turning the island into a tourist paradise. However, his plans were thwarted by the Great Depression.

The island's potential was realized in 1962 by the Mackle brothers. Having successfully developed projects in Florida, they formed the Deltona Corporation and aimed to create a year-round resort island where people could live, work, and play. A massive marketing campaign prepared Marco Island for its grand opening in January 1965, attracting 25,000 visitors on its first day, with homes selling rapidly.

Throughout the 1970s, people flocked to the island. This quaint beach town evolved into a sophisticated island community, now attracting people worldwide with its beautiful weather and beaches. The charm of Marco Island has stood the test of time, evolving from a marshy, mosquito-ridden land into Florida's treasured gem.
