The Harry S. Truman Little White House is a destination that will intrigue travelers seeking something new and unique. American Butler can organize a tour to such a place, always on the lookout for interesting and unconventional spots for leisure in Florida.
History of construction
The history of Key West, like the museum itself, is closely linked to the military. For about 200 years, Spanish and English ships that were traveling to European lands from the Caribbean Sea frequented the Florida Keys. A naval air station was established here, equipped with seaplanes and dirigibles.
Harry Truman's house was built in 1890, initially intended for strategic purposes during the American-Spanish War, and later it became a key center for naval operations in the Caribbean Sea. The house was divided into two parts – for the commandant and his team.
The building became an interesting historical location during 1946-1952, as it was rented by the President of the USA during this period for rest, rejuvenation, and also for holding important political meetings and conferences. This place came to symbolize his style of governance and became an important part of his presidential legacy. At that time, Harry Truman chose this building for his winter residence, which would be located away from Washington. The President rested here, fished, played golf, and socialized with friends. After him, the house continued to serve as a residence for John F. Kennedy, Dwight Eisenhower, and Jimmy Carter.
The official opening of the museum took place in 1991, following a reconstruction of the mansion.
What's interesting about the mansion
The Harry Truman Little White House in Key West can only be visited with a guide. The street where the building is located is named Truman Avenue. Some of the furniture belonged to the former president and was used by Thomas Edison, who stayed in the mansion for six months during World War I.
On the enclosed porch, there are chairs with table lamps and a table where Truman used to play poker. There are also many items belonging to the former head of state (books, documents, household items, and personal belongings). There is a bar, and films are shown in the hall. Nearby the television, there stands a life-size statue of Truman. There are also photographs and clothing of the president.
Additionally, visitors can purchase "presidential" souvenirs in the mansion.
Museum Features
The Harry Truman Little White House operates daily. However, it cannot be visited during various celebrations and weddings, but guests are informed about this in advance. Every year in May, symposiums are held here discussing Truman's political achievements.
In this mansion, you can not only glimpse into Truman's private life but also book a wedding ceremony. The Little White House hosts weddings for both political figures and ordinary people. It features a beautiful garden with neat paths and terraces with lights, making any wedding celebration special and unique.
The theme of this shaded mansion is complemented by other interesting places in Key West.
Tourists planning to spend 2-3 days here can stay in nearby hotels:
- Marquesa Hotel;
- Ocean Key Resort & Spa;
- Westin Key West Resort & Marina.
Visiting the mansion allows you to become a part of US history, immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the American presidents' residence, and enjoy a relaxing stay.
