Washington is a city that is known only from the news. And this, for a moment, is the capital of the USA! And this is not because it is boring and uninteresting. At least we know exactly what is special here. And we'll be happy to tell you.
The first reason why many do not know about Washington DC as the capital of the United States is the confusion with the names. See for yourself: Washington is at the same time the president, city, state, and actually there is some other Washington DC, and they also write that the capital is the District of Columbia...
And now the correct answer: the capital of the United States is the city of Washington, aka Washington D.C., named after the first president of the country, George Washington.
Prefix D.C. to the name means District of Columbia or the District of Columbia is an autonomous region to which the city territorially belongs. That is, formally the capital lies on the land of autonomy, which does not belong to any of the states, so sometimes adding "DC" to the name is important.
It also avoids confusion. Americans loved Washington so much that they also named the state on the opposite side of the country after his last name. Therefore, if there is a risk that you will be misunderstood, in English it is better to call the state of Washington, and the city — Washington, D.C. or just D.C., or better, just book a tour with us.

History

The territory of modern Washington, at least 400 thousand years ago, was mastered by the Indians. A piece of land on the Potomac River was a tidbit — there was a semblance of an Indian market there. Several tribesmen sailed up the river to exchange everything from feathers for costumes to food and weapons.
Europeans discovered this land at the beginning of the 17th century under the command of the English captain John Smith. Later, the colonial landowners transferred these territories to each other without any special claims — the capital of the state at that time was located in Philadelphia.
In 1790, the right to choose the location of the new capital was given to the first president, George Washington. He wished to place the capital near the city of Alexandria, Virginia. But later it was decided to expand the territory — to build a new city of the state, and to include nearby Alexandria and Georgetown in the capital and unite it into a district named after Columbus.
So, 40 boulders were placed around the perimeter of the future capital — some of them still stand in place and are considered national monuments. In 1800, Washington and the District of Columbia were already functioning as the political center of the United States.
