What transport to use
Public transportation in Miami is well developed, allowing you to move freely and comfortably throughout the city and its suburbs without needing a personal vehicle. The main types of public transport include metro, commuter trains, buses, and taxis. There's also a free monorail system with 21 stops. Suburban routes are covered by Tri-Rail. You can download maps of the city’s transportation system and transfer stations online. Bus routes also include nearby suburban areas.
This is especially convenient for tourists who plan to visit parks, beaches, restaurants, and attractions. Parking a car almost always requires payment — about $1 per hour. For trips outside the city, it’s possible to rent a car. Taxis are also a common option and often cheaper than car rental, unless you're going on a picnic or a fishing trip along the coast.
You can also rent a bike, scooter, or electric scooter. Some transport options are free and even equipped with air conditioning.
In most hotels and hostels you can buy or take a free transit map with the designation of all possible modes of transport and convenient routes.American Butler
Miami Metrorail
Imagine this: from Miami Airport, you don’t need to take an expensive “sky express” — you can ride a regular commuter train (Tri-Rail) or even the metro. A trip on the commuter train costs just $2.50, and a single metro ride is only $2.25. The metro operates from 5:00 AM to midnight, so even if you’re leaving a nightclub that closes at 5:00 AM, you can easily catch a ride home.
Key stations include the Miami Airport, South Miami, Kendall, Downtown, Coral Gables, Jackson Memorial Hospital, and Brownsville. Trains run every 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the day. The metro spans about 40 km, has two lines — Green and Orange — and 23 stations in total. Convenient transfers to commuter trains make the system even more accessible.
To pay for your ride, use an Easy Card, which also works on buses. If you’re heading toward Biscayne Bay in Downtown, a transfer to the commuter train may be required.

Metrobus
Taking the bus in Miami costs the same as the metro — $2.25 per ride. Express buses are slightly more expensive at $2.65. The main difference is that regular buses make frequent stops at nearly every street corner, while express buses cover longer distances with fewer stops and move a bit faster. There are approximately 100 routes across the city.
Most Miami buses operate from 4:30 AM to 1:30 AM. Some routes run 24/7. The average wait time is around 19 minutes during peak hours and 20 minutes at other times.
Boarding is done through the front door. You can pay using an Easy Card or with cash. Keep in mind that drivers do not give change, as it distracts them from driving. There are no change machines on board either, so it’s better to prepare the exact fare or load your card in advance.
Good to Know
- 01. How to recognize a bus stop in Miami?
Bus stops are marked by a rectangular white sign with green and blue stripes and route numbers. It’s helpful to check your route on the map in advance. All buses are air-conditioned — which is essential in Miami’s hot, tropical climate. - 02. How are the buses equipped?
In addition to air conditioning, all buses have bike racks at the front, since cycling is very popular in the city. Buses are also wheelchair accessible and equipped with ramps, rails, and secure straps for safety.

Metromover
Metromover is a free, automated monorail system in Miami that runs through Downtown and Brickell. It connects to the Government Center and Brickell Metrorail stations, but you can hop on or off at any of the 20+ stops along the route — many of them located far from the metro stations.
The full loop is about 6 km long and takes just 15 minutes to complete. The trains are fully automated and operate without drivers, giving the ride a futuristic, amusement-park feel. Think of it as a mini Disneyland on rails — but free and surprisingly efficient.
All Metromover cars are equipped with free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, and surveillance cameras, making rides both comfortable and secure. It’s especially popular among tourists — not just as a mode of transport, but also as a chance to enjoy scenic urban views from above. The track runs over roads and between skyscrapers, giving passengers a unique “flying over the city” experience.
American Butler Tip:
Metromover is perfect for short rides around central Miami. Want to save on taxi fare? Just plan your route accordingly and use it to reach most Downtown and Brickell attractions — for free.

Miami Trolley
Another type of free public transportation in Miami is the Miami Trolley. Despite the name, it’s not a traditional wired trolleybus, but rather a retro-style electric bus with air conditioning, running on fixed loop routes through different parts of the city.
Quiet, comfortable, and charming, the Miami Trolley is the perfect option for anyone looking to explore Miami at a relaxed pace — especially in popular districts like Coral Gables, Downtown, Brickell, Wynwood, Coconut Grove, and more.
All routes are looped, meaning they always return to their starting point, which makes them ideal for tourists. Trolleys run at intervals of 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the time of day and traffic. Like the Metromover, these trolleys are equipped with air conditioning, and some even offer USB charging ports and onboard info screens.
American Butler Tip:
Looking for a free sightseeing tour of Miami? Just hop on the right trolley line. It’s a convenient and cost-effective way to explore the city without spending on transportation or a tour guide.

Taxi / cab
Several taxi companies operate in Miami, including both public and private services. Fares for private taxi can typically be found on the official websites of each provider. For visitors and tourists, it is strongly recommended to use only licensed taxi services — they are safer and more transparent when it comes to pricing.
You can use the online tool Taxifarefinder to estimate your fare in advance.
- Base fare: From $2.50, then about $2.00 per additional kilometer.
- Payment: Accepted in both cash and card.
- Mandatory tips: 15–20% of the fare — tipping is a standard part of American service culture.
- Toll roads and bridges are charged separately.
Important to know: Tipping in the U.S. isn’t optional — it’s an expected part of paying for any service.
In large cities like Miami, limousine taxi services are also available, starting from around $500 per hour. These are commonly used for events, parties, and wedding transfers.
When should you choose a taxi?
A taxi may be the best option if you:
- Just landed and don’t want to deal with parking hassles;
- Need a quick transfer with luggage;
- Are traveling with children and require proper car seats based on age and weight;
- Prefer to have everything handled for you without figuring out routes or schedules.

A car isn’t the only way to get around Miami. The city is located on the coast, and water routes are just as popular. Yachts, catamarans, and sightseeing boats are not only scenic but also practical.
For a romantic getaway, you can rent a catamaran and sail along the coast or head to nearby islands. For those who enjoy active recreation, we offer deep-sea fishing trips — fully equipped yachts with experienced crews and all necessary gear are available.
Water Taxi
Another great option is the water taxi. It’s more like a ferry with fixed routes, operating along Downtown, Biscayne Bay, and other waterfront areas.
- One-way fare: $15 | Round-trip: $25
- Bike transport: $5
- Strollers: Free
Water transport in Miami isn’t just an exotic touch — it’s a real and scenic way to get around the city. It’s especially convenient for tourists who want a blend of sightseeing and practical transportation.
Cruise Tours from Bayside
If you want to explore Miami from the water but prefer not to rent a private boat, tourist cruise boats departing from Bayside Marketplace are the perfect option.
These scenic cruises navigate Biscayne Bay and offer views of:
- Downtown Miami’s skyline,
- Millionaire homes on Star Island and Palm Island,
- Celebrity yachts and the Port of Miami.
Prices range from $25 to $35 per person, and cruises typically last about 1.5 hours. Most boats have an onboard bar with drinks and snacks, and tour guides provide commentary in English and Spanish.
This is one of the most affordable and spectacular ways to see the city — the perfect experience for your first days in Miami!

Tourist buses — Hop on, Hop off
Miami is not just about beaches — it’s also home to cultural, architectural, and natural landmarks. One of the most convenient ways to see it all in a short time is by using Hop-On Hop-Off sightseeing buses.
The route covers the city’s most iconic spots: South Beach, Downtown, Little Havana, the Art Deco District, and more. These tours are ideal for first-time visitors — they help you navigate the city and plan future explorations.
- Price: from $40 per adult; children under 1 meter tall ride free.
- Departure frequency: every 30–60 minutes throughout the day.
- Boarding: possible at any stop — hop on and off wherever it’s convenient.
This is one of the most efficient ways to explore the city, especially if your time is limited or you plan to visit multiple neighborhoods.
Tip:
Choose morning hours — it can get very hot on the open-top deck during midday. Don’t forget a hat, sunglasses, and water.

Easy Card: convenient and profitable
Easy Card is a reusable transportation card valid on all types of public transit in Miami: metro, buses, and Tri-Rail. You can purchase it for 1 day, a week, or a month.
- Where to buy: at all metro stations or online via the official website.
- Top-up options: available at kiosks and online. Note: online payments can take up to 24 hours to process, so urgent top-ups should be done through machines.
Using the Easy Card helps save time, avoid issues with exact change (remember, bus drivers don’t provide change), and eliminates the need for cash. Also, a single ride fare of $2.25 adds up quickly if you travel a lot — so getting a pass pays off.
Tip from American Butler:
Plan your trips in advance and top up your card before leaving home — it’ll save you stress on the go.

In the U.S., having a personal vehicle isn’t a luxury — it’s a way to maintain freedom of movement and save time. This is especially true in Miami. Distances are long, the weather can change quickly, and the city's attractions are spread out across different neighborhoods and beyond.
At first, taxis or private transfers may be the best option, especially if you’ve just arrived and don’t yet know your routes. But once you’re ready to explore the area, head to the beach, visit a museum, or dine out — getting around without a car can be difficult.
American Butler will help you find the perfect transportation — from standard vehicles to yachts or even helicopters, depending on your needs. We’ll handle all the logistics so you can focus on what matters most: enjoying your trip.
