History of the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota

The Mote Marine unique marine laboratory was founded in 1955 on the picturesque island of City Island. The creation of the marine laboratory was carried out by a non-profit organization that implements programs related to the main areas of ocean ecology:

• study of microbiology of coral reefs;
• study of phytoplankton;
• studies of aquaculture of marine as well as fresh water;
• ecotoxicology;
• the biology of sharks and the need for their protection;
• issues of fishery ecology and difficulties associated with the breeding of commercial fish species;

Aquarium
