Nova Southeastern University

America has always excelled at creating spaces where the idea "anyone can achieve success" becomes a reality. It is in such places that new discoveries are made, startups are launched, research papers are written, and future leaders are shaped. One vivid example of this phenomenon is Nova Southeastern University (NSU) — a university that strengthens its position on the educational map of the U.S. and the world every year.

Today, it is known not only as the largest private research university in Florida, but also as one of the most innovative educational institutions in America. Here, doctors and lawyers, biologists and psychologists, programmers and educators are trained, while the campus itself becomes a living laboratory of ideas.

  • NSU is the largest private research university in Florida.
  • Ranks among the top 10 largest non-profit private universities in the U.S.
  • The university colors are gray and dark blue.
  • The student newspaper is called The Current.
  • The university is a partner of NASA in research projects.

NSU’s Dual Admission Program lets high school students secure a spot in a doctoral track (such as medicine or law) before enrolling. It’s a rare opportunity in the U.S. and a major advantage for ambitious students.

A brief history: how it started

1964 — a time of change in the U.S. John F. Kennedy had recently left his mark on history, the country was still recovering from the shock of the president’s assassination, and American society was gearing up for new challenges: the space race, technological breakthroughs, and social reforms. Against this backdrop, a project emerged in the city of Fort Lauderdale, better known as a resort and yachting hub, that would transform the future of the region.

The founders dreamed of creating not just an educational institution, but a 21st-century research institute. They were inspired by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and other centers where practical research was as important as theoretical science.

  1. 01. The Early Years
  • The university was named Nova University of Advanced Technology — the word Nova symbolized a "new star," a breakthrough, and the beginning of something big.
  • In the early years, studies focused on natural and applied sciences: physics, engineering, and computer technology.
  • Even then, the university stood out for its unconventional approach: emphasis was placed on small student groups, personal interaction with faculty, and participation in real research projects.
  1. 02. Path to Expansion
By the 1970s, Nova realized that a purely technical focus was not enough and began opening new schools: education, psychology, and law.
Special attention was given to professions requiring practical work and human interaction. NSU was among the first private U.S. universities to offer distance learning programs for students from other states.
  2. 03. Merger with Southeastern University
A key turning point occurred in 1994, when Nova merged with Southeastern University of the Health Sciences. From that moment, the university adopted its current name — Nova Southeastern University.
This merger was strategic: medical faculties, dentistry, and pharmacy were added to the technical and humanities programs. NSU became a truly multidisciplinary university, and its campuses began expanding throughout South Florida.
  3. 04. Growth and Recognition
By the 2000s, the university had entered the top ten largest private non-profit universities in the U.S.
  • International centers were opened in the Bahamas and Jamaica.
  • Research laboratories were established in oceanography and biotechnology.
  • A large campus was built in Fort Lauderdale, including the Alvin Sherman Library — one of the largest in Florida.

Today, NSU comprises 18 schools and colleges, over 25,000 students, and recruits from around 116 countries. Notably, nearly half of the students are international, making the university an intercultural platform where learning occurs in a multicultural environment.

Fun Fact: When the university first opened in the 1960s, many locals wondered why a research center was being built in a resort city where people were used to beaches and leisure. Yet this step transformed Fort Lauderdale into not only a tourist destination but also an educational hub. Today, yacht exhibitions, IT companies, and NSU campuses coexist — a prime example of how one decision can shape the future of an entire region.
