History of Russian Hill

Russian Hill is located right north of Nob Hill, south of Fisherman's Wharf and west of North Beach. The hill is bordered on the western side by areas of the Pacific Heights, the Cow's Depression and the Marina area.

The name of the district stretches from the era of the gold rush, when the settlers discovered a small Russian burial site on top of this hill. Russian naval and merchant ships frequently visited San Francisco during the 19th century, starting in 1806. There are several references to the graves of crew members in the Russkaya Gorka cemetery in the first half of the century. The cemetery has been removed, but the name remains to this day.

Although the oldest Russian Orthodox church is Holy Trinity Cathedral, located a few blocks from Van Ness and Green Street, but at present, the Russian-speaking community mainly resides in Richmond.

Today's Russian Hill is a place of charming restaurants, bars and small businesses grouped on Green Hyde Street between Jackson and Union Street. Polk Street has many unusual boutiques, antique shops, trendy restaurants, nightclubs and tourist attractions.

Between Polk and Green streets, a mini-French quarter appeared, where you will find an excellent bistro, a traditional cafe-boulangeri, a French antiques store and several souvenir shops

What to see

Russian Hill has a surprisingly beautiful view of the city and the bay from different angles. And although Russian Hill is in a fairly secluded place, it is within walking distance of the magnificent restaurants and viewing areas of North Beach, Fisherman's Wharf, Cow's Basin, Union Street, marina and Kashtanovaya Street.

• Lombard street

One of the most visited attractions on the Roller Coaster is Lombard Street. This curved street was built in the 1930s to make it easier for its residents to climb and descend the steep hillside. • Russian Hill Park

One of the best Russian Hill parks, located on the corner of Hyde Street. At the top of the park is an amazing view of the San Francisco Bay, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island and Sausalito.

• Vallejo Street Crest Historic District

The steepest historical area on Russian Hill is Vallejo Street, it includes a small park called Ina Coolbrith Park. From here, you can enjoy magnificent views of San Francisco Bay, Treasure Island, North Beach and Coit Tower. You will find it at the intersection of Vallejo and Taylor.

• San Francisco Art Institute

One of the little-known attractions on Russian Hill in San Francisco is the fresco by Diego Rivera at the San Francisco Art Institute. Rivera was a controversial artist who came to San Francisco several times in the 1930s and 1940s.

It is called "Creating a fresco depicting a city building" and was completed in 1931. This is only one of the three Rivera frescoes that are still on display in San Francisco.
