Fisher Collection at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

The Doris and Donald Fisher Collection is one of the largest private collections of contemporary art in the world. With the founding of Gap Inc in San Francisco, the couple began collecting photographs to revitalize the company’s offices in the mid-1970s. Soon, they expanded their ability to select material, including paintings, sculptures and drawings.

Spouses constantly studied independently, visiting galleries, museums and workshops of artists around the world, making acquaintances with many of them. As the late Don Fisher said: “The collection is the result of what we watch a lot, and then we watch.”

Fishers have always paid attention to the work of artists whom they admired over the years. As a result, the collection is distinguished by a significant number of works by Alexander Calder, Ellsworth Kelly, William Kentridge, Anselm Kiefer, Saul LeWitt, Agnes Martin, Gerhard Richter, Richard Serre and Andy Warhol and others.

Occupying more than three floors of the museum, the first exhibition of the Fisher collection in SFMOMA emphasized its marked focus on American abstraction, American pop, figurative and minimalist art after 1960.

Many of Fisher’s favorite works of art were kept at home; they believed that art enriches our lives and stimulates creativity. Therefore, they shared most of their collection with Gap employees, demonstrating it in the offices and specialized galleries of the company.

Fishers have had partnerships with SFMOMA for many years. Since the 1980s, they have been members of the Museum’s Board of Trustees, made exceptional art gifts and supported numerous major exhibitions and educational programs. And now the family’s connection with SFMOMA is being traced through their huge collection, which is presented in the museum after reconstruction.

Pritzker Photography Center

SFMOMA is one of the very first museums to recognize photography as an art form. It has more than 17800 works, starting with the appearance of sensitive film in 1839, and ending with digital images today.

The Pritzker Center now occupies most of the third floor, covering an area of 15,000 square feet. Permanent exhibitions expanded and new exhibition galleries appeared, as well as a training center and a photo portrait exhibition.
