History

Missionary Trails Regional Park was founded in 1974. More than 30 archaeological sites were found in the park.

Mission Trails Regional Park — American Butler Let's say a few words about the indigenous people of this region, whose history goes back more than 10 thousand years. The Kumeyai Indians were small hunters and the first inhabitants who lived in the place where the park is now located. They remained there until 1910, when pastoralists and farmers acquired land.

But we jumped too far, we will return to the XIX century. In 1769, a group of missionaries led by Father Junipero Serra arrived and settled on a hill. Their goal was to create a number of religious missions in California to spread Christianity among the indigenous population.

The mission in San Diego needed a source of water for the livelihoods of residents, so they decided to build a 244-foot-long dam of stone and cement on the exposed rock in the gorge. The construction of the dam was completed in 1815.

Soon after construction was completed, Mexico took control of California. Later, the land again passed from hand to hand, but to America, during the Mexican-American War of 1848. In this area, ranches and farms were actively acquired, and during the years of World War I, the territory was used as a training ground for military exercises. And now the place of worship has become a park that contains most of the Spanish heritage.

The main objective of Mission Trails Regional Park is to provide information about the life of the first residents of San Diego, their history and their contribution to the culture of the city.

What to do in the park

  • In the park you will find many routes. Hiking, cycling and horse riding trails range from light to challenging. Every week, trekking trips are led by rangers. These excursions cover most of the park.
  • The Old Dam is the main historical attraction of the Mission Trails. The observation deck offers a beautiful view, and the dam itself is the starting point for a number of hiking trails.
  • Murray Lake organizes fishing, which is allowed on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays and some public holidays. During the fishing season, the lake is populated by large perches, Canadian catfish and trout. The promenade is popular for cycling, rollerblading, walking, jogging and picnics.
