Why are Sunset Cliffs interesting

Next to Cabrillo Monument is the best point for enjoying ocean views in Point Lome. The cliffs, located 9 miles west of downtown San Diego, extend over 68 acres and extend 1.5 miles along the coastline of the peninsula.

Untouched vegetation along with stunning views of the ocean make an unforgettable walk in the area, both in the daytime and at night. There are also several secluded beaches, although getting to them can be difficult. To get there, you have to go down the rocky cliffs.

The area is quite popular with surfers, so expect to see many locals catching the waves. We recommend taking a sweatshirt with you in case the ocean breeze gets too cool.

We suggest using the toilet before the hike, as the rocks do not have amenities. Tragic accidents happen and people fall as a result of accidents, so be sure to pay attention to signs indicating danger.

If you want to avoid crowds, try to plan your trip in the middle of the week, and not for the weekend.

History of Sunset Cliffs

For centuries, Native Indians visited the area of present Sunset Cliffs to get seafood from the tidal zone, collect food, enjoy the beauty of the cliffs and the ocean.

The trail in the form in which it appears now was developed by tycoon Albert Spaulding for the 1915 exhibition. He spent $2 million to hire a Japanese architect and build walkways, picturesque bridges, paved stairs to the ocean, benches and thatched shelters. Spaulding named his estate Sunset Cliffs Park, and then gave the name to this area.

In 1925, Spalding's property was bought and turned into a residential area. The new owner spent about $1 million on the restoration of structures created by Spalding.

San Diego later acquired land and turned the coastal strip into a city park. Spalding's work under the influence of weather and the action of the waves was ultimately destroyed. After the condition of the facilities worsened significantly, the city considered the area unsafe and deleted all the creations of Spalding that were built.
