Christmas Parade in Hollywood

The Christmas Hollywood Parade takes place every year for almost 90 years on the weekend after Thanksgiving in late November. A 3.5-mile route runs along Hollywood and Sunset Boulevards, and there have always been many celebrities among its participants.

A Brief History of the Los Angeles Christmas Parade

Christmas Hollywood Parade — Santa Claus photo — American ButlerSeeing the success of Thanksgiving Day parades and celebrating Christmas in downtown Los Angeles, Colonel Harry Bane in 1928 gave birth to a brilliant idea — to profit by promoting the sale of holiday gifts along the famous Hollywood Boulevard.

For the very first parade, Bane persuaded actress Ginette Loff to ride with Santa in a reindeer harness on the boulevard. The popularity of the movement grew rapidly thanks to a smart decision to call a star. In addition to the splendor of the event, stunning garlands and Christmas trees decorate the streets, making the boulevard a great place for walking and shopping on holidays.

Every year, a star performs the duties of the great marshal, riding a sleigh on Santa's Santa’s Hollywood Boulevard, and also turns on a switch that illuminates colorful jewelry.

The parade was suspended from 1942 to 1944 in connection with the Second World War, but it was reopened in 1945, where it was marked by record attendance and continued to grow from the 1950s to the 1970s, adding mobile platforms, animals and celebrities.

In 1978, the event was renamed the Hollywood Christmas Parade to attract more celebrities, and it began to be broadcast on television. In 2007, the parade was threatened with cancellation, but the city of Los Angeles sponsored the event and continued to exist.

The Hollywood Christmas parade continues to bring joy to children of all ages, celebrating the glamorous street and city and starting the family holiday season.

  • Balloons, mobile platforms, music bands, celebrities, and Santa's special guest appearances at the end of each show are shown at the parade.
  • Seats in the stands can be bought for $45-85, depending on how close you want to sit.
  • Discounts are provided for groups of 25 or more people. Free seating along the side of the main path is also available.
  • The preliminary concert for ticket holders begins at 05:00 pm, and the parade begins at 06:00 pm.
  • Early birds can catch a glimpse of the LAPD motorcycle brigade, which hosts the show with its bizarre stunts and colorful sirens. This happens 20 minutes before the parade.
  • Since the street is quite cold at this time, do not forget to bring snacks and a thermos with something warm, such as hot chocolate, cider or soup.
  • Parking is limited during the Christmas Parade in Hollywood, so we recommend finding a public parking spot such as the Hollywood and Highland shopping complex.
