The Mob Museum in Las Vegas

If you are fascinated by the likes of Al Capone and the underworld of the gangsters of the past, then the Mob Museum in downtown Las Vegas is definitely worth a visit.

The exhibits and artifacts of the museum detail the influence of the mafia on the gambling capital and the rest of the country, as well as the actions of law enforcement agencies to destroy the organization.

What is the Mob Museum?

The Mob Museum in Las Vegas — American ButlerThe National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement, commonly known as the Mob Museum, is dedicated to the history of organized crime in the United States. He also talks about the measures taken by law enforcement agencies to combat the mafia.

The museum is housed in a former post office and courthouse on Stewart Avenue in downtown Las Vegas, which was built in 1933 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

For larger groups, guided tours lasting approximately 90 minutes are offered. Audio tours are offered in multiple languages, including English, French, Italian and Spanish, and accompanying materials are available at the museum's information desk. Group tours are offered for groups of 10 or more people. The museum is not recommended for groups of elementary school students due to the frequent theme of death and violence among the exhibits.

Special public events such as concerts, autographs and a reception to mark the opening of temporary exhibits are held periodically. The museum can also be rented by individuals for private special events, including weddings, parties and business conferences.

History of the museum

The federal building was sold to the city in 2000, on condition that it be restored and converted into a cultural institution for public use.

At the time, the city's mayor was Oscar Goodman, a former attorney for well-known Mafia clients. Goodman's idea of converting the post office and courthouse into a museum dedicated to organized crime met with opposition from Italian-American cultural groups. On the other hand, the idea was supported by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

After the project was approved, the museum's exhibits were designed under the direction of Dennis Barry, who was one of the founders of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the International Spy Museum. A total of $50 million was allocated for this project, with almost half of it going towards the restoration of the historic building.

The museum was officially opened to visitors in February 2012. Today, the museum is owned by the City of Las Vegas and is run by a non-profit organization.
