A Brief History of the School
In 1896, Paul C. Ransom, a teacher and lawyer from New York, founded Pine Knot Camp as a boys' school in the Coconut Grove area. In 1902, he merged it with a campus in the Adirondacks of New York to create the Adirondack-Florida School, the first migratory boarding school. The program was based on experiential learning, where students attended classes in Florida during the winter and in New York during the fall and spring. The school closed during World War II but reopened in 1947. In 1949, the Adirondack campus was closed, and the school continued in Coconut Grove as a boys' school.
Ransom Everglades School was officially formed in 1974 in Miami through the merger of Ransom School and Everglades School for girls (founded in 1955 by Marie B. Swenson), becoming a co-educational institution. The school continues to be influenced by the values of its founders. Approximately 20% of students at Ransom Everglades are either international or speak a language other than English at home.
