Mount Charleston

The view of the snow-capped mountains seems a bit surreal when Las Vegas still feels the warmth of the desert sun. At 11,916 feet above sea level, Charleston Peak is covered in snow for more than six months.

Although it may seem that this is far away, this cool vacation is only 45 minutes from the city. This guarded relaxation area provides a relaxing getaway where you can enjoy hiking, picnics, forests, golf and even snow sports.

Mount Charleston is located 35 miles northwest of Las Vegas. The peak and the ridge are included in the Charleston Mountain Conservation Area and part of the larger Spring Mountain National Recreation Area, which is located on the Gumbolt-Toyabe National Forest with an area of 6.3 million acres.

Charleston Mountain Territory — 57,441 acres of forests and mountains. The National Recreation Area consists of 316,000 acres of wildlife and year-round recreation, including camping, hiking, access to off-road and undeveloped areas, horse riding, rock climbing and skiing during the winter months.

The hill resort is a full-service hotel and a centrally located base for exploring the area. In the morning, guests can enjoy coffee and a cupcake at the bistro or have breakfast in the A Cut Above's restaurant.

After a long day of skiing or hiking, you can relax in the dry or wet sauna, and then relax on the plush sofas in front of the fireplace.

For a charming rustic night out, book your stay at Mount Charleston Lodge. Campers can accommodate in one of five equipped campsites in Spring Mountain. A simple campground is allowed in these places, and guests can rely on the typical amenities of the camp: toilets, picnic tables, a fireplace or grill, drinking water and even electricity.

Mount Charleston: Trails & Routes

The best way to discover the wild area of Mount Charleston is to take a walk. With over 52 miles of trails, there are many options for both beginners and experienced travelers.

Mount Charleston — Nevada Nature Reserves and Parks — American ButlerThese trails allow tourists to stroll between the rows of juniper, mahogany, aspen and pine trees, enjoying views of the alpine slopes and limestone cliffs.

  • Trail Mary Jane Falls is a popular two-hour walk, easy enough for the whole family, and includes a visit to the cave and waterfall.
  • Longer and more scenic hikes in the area include Bonanza Peak and Charleston Peak trails.
  • Mountain bike trails are located on the Bristlecon and Soumill trails.
  • The best riding routes are along the top of the Bristlecon Trail.
  • Mount Charleston Trail Rides in Kyle Canyon offers guided horse riding excursions.

Mount Charleston is the main attraction for avid climbers who flock to the area to climb pristine limestone. A popular vacation spot is The Hood Overhang, located along the Tropical Canyon and Burglar's Loop.

A scenic ride up Kyle Canyon offers a magnificent view of the wildlife. Drivers must cross the Deer Creek Highway and go down the Li Canyon Gorge to enjoy stunning views. Be sure to refuel before leaving, as there are no gas stations in the recreation area.

Picnics are open all year and include tables, grills, fireplace rings, bathrooms and toilets. In some of them there is a place for friendly competitions on volleyball courts. Most picnic spots are closed during the snowy winter months, with the exception of the Foxtail zone, where you can arrange a snow fight, make a snowman or ride a sled.

Best time to visit

In the summer, Mount Charleston is convenient, and daytime temperatures are relatively low. This can be a great relief for visitors arriving from the desert, where in summer the temperature rises to 35 degrees Celsius.

Summer may be the best time for hiking on the mountain, as the rest of Las Vegas is too hot for outdoor activities. However, July and August are also part of the “monsoon season” in the region, so some campsites may be closed due to increased rainfall.

Naturally, Li Canyon and other parts of the mountain are popular with the advent of winter. Snowfall can sometimes be extreme, so before you go camping, be sure to check the information about road closures in advance.
