Punk rock music festival in Las Vegas

In the last days of May, thousands of music lovers will come to the desert to enjoy a three-day outdoor concert. But at this festival, you won't see flower garlands on your head, fine dining, or $15 cocktails. You will find cheap beer, barbecue and crowds of madmen in a small town called Las Vegas.

Although now known as one of the biggest and wildest fests in Vegas, Punk Rock Bowling didn't start out that way.

Started in 1999 as a homemade bowling tournament, Punk Rock Bowling quickly evolved into a mixture of competition and music. Punk rockers and bowling fans around the world will be in Las Vegas at the end of May for this huge event. Bands, independent labels, fanzines, college radio, the entire underground punk community that has lived and thrived on its own will be represented here.

The Stern brothers are committed to the ideals of individuality and are a force for change and oppose authoritarian, fascist, sexist, racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic and other forms of oppression in culture, government, business and institutions. Mark and Sean have been doing this for more than 40 years of their lives and hope it stays that way for as long as people believe that we can all make a difference through what we do.

Clearly, the Sterns know their stuff and are more than qualified to curate the best punk party of the year. But the main question is who do you want to see? There are 48 festival bands to choose from!

Read the article and you will find out why the festival is so memorable.

Punk Rock Bowling is a music festival founded in Las Vegas in 1999 by brothers Sean and Mark Stern. Last year, this landmark event celebrated its 20th anniversary.

But with that milestone behind them, they can now look forward to even more: their 21st birthday! What did you have for your birthday at 21? We bet you didn't get Rancid, The Hives, Descendents, Fucked Up and The Specials. The good news is, this is now your party.

You and a crowd of like-minded people from all over the world will gather in Las Vegas for Memorial Day, May 24-27, 2019. It's a confluence of rockers, amateurs, bowlers, activists, the music industry, and even a lot of casual viewers who just want to see what all the hubbub is about. When thousands of punks from a thousand different scenes gather in one place, it's quite a spectacle, we can assure you.

Story

Although the festival is located in Vegas, its roots in Los Angeles are a huge part of its heart and soul. The Sterns entered the Hollywood music scene in 1977, inspired by the performances of punk pioneers The Screamers, The Go-Go's, The Weirdos and The Dickies.

They formed their own band, Youth Brigade, in 1980 and since there were few festivals where punk bands could play, they started putting on their own shows. They started in small venues, then they had their own short-lived establishment.

They ended up hosting one of the biggest punk shows of the era at the Hollywood Palladium. “We had about 3,500 people who came for it. The Hollywood police were also in full gear!” Stern recalls.

The following year, the brothers presented the Youth Brigade' 83 show in Huntington Park. The show ended with a huge punk riot. Stern says that after that the guys decided to focus on their record label and leave the promotion. This continued until 1999.

It all started in the morning when brothers Sean and Mark Stern decided on tour that they wanted to throw a bowling alley party for their friends in the punk rock community. What started out as a small party and an excuse to head to Las Vegas has evolved into what is now known as the Punk Rock Bowling & Music Festival.

The event took place for the first nine years in hotels with bowling alleys, but the stellar cast began to overshadow the action, requiring a bigger and better location.

“In 2010 we decided to include a festival element and move the date to the May weekend when the weather improves,” says Stern. “We moved everything to the city center, where new establishments, bars and restaurants have been set up over the past few years, and we have received a huge space just a few blocks from the hotel.”

How everything is organized

The veteran bands of the festival keep their relevance, releasing new material and, according to the organizers, there are 30 new bands that have never played here before.

The music will play continuously, but unlike other festivals, there are no simultaneous performances of different bands, so you don't have to miss anything. Plus, if you get there early, the first 1,000 people who come to the festival will get a free drink!

Festival passes for the 3-day festival start at $125 and are on sale now. VIP passes start at $350.

All three-day passes come with a show access code that will allow the purchaser to purchase up to three tickets to the late night show before they go on sale to the general public.
